my new year holiday(100字)(二)

The word “holiday” brings to mind the time I am able to spend with my family, be it eating, playing games or watching television. To me, those times are the best memories to have and treasure. Of course, in my family, during the holidays, it has always been a tradition to have reunion dinners with some of my relatives.

However, I have never found family reunion dinners a pleasurable event due to the incessant comparisons of material possessions, academic achievements, job status and everything else by certain members of my family because more often than not, families, though consisting of members that seem to find a way to live harmoniously together all the time, also consist of one or two members that never seem to stop trying to outdo each other. Take the recent June holidays reunion dinner for instance.

“Evan, go and take a shower and put on your best clothing!” screeched Mom. I sighed as I walked up the stairs slowly. My mother’s beautiful, melodious voice followed me up the stairs.

“Hurry up! You don’t want your cousins to see you in rags! Your Aunt Katie must think I don’t dress you well!”

Half an hour later, the doorbell rang. My mother, clad in the latest designer dress, complete with diamond earrings, necklaces and gold rings, quickly ran to the door and flung it open. In stepped my cousins, Clare and Wilson, Aunt Katie and Uncle Tom. Our parents exchanged handshakes and pleasantries with smiles on their faces.

“Good to see you, Jack,” boomed Uncle Tom, “You too, Keller.”

Mom gave a false laugh as she covered her mouth with her hands.” Come in quickly, dinner’s ready.”

“Here.” Aunt Katie thrust a cake box towards my mom. “I made this,” she announced proudly with a haughty smile on her face.

Mom took a peek inside the box and if she was impressed by what she saw, she hid it well.

After the fifth course, I had found out almost everything that had happened since Chinese New Year. Clare and Wilson had both scored 8 A1s in their mid-year

examinations, which Aunt Katie kept stressing was a remarkable achievement. Mom then proudly revealed my results which also comprised of 8 A1s to Aunt Katie who immediately went silent. Uncle Tom has been promoted to become Manager of his software company.

“Oh, but Jack has been promoted too. He’s now the Chief Finance Officer.” Aunt Katie’s only reply was to stab her piece of fish with a little more force than needed. “I like your dress, Keller,” Aunt Katie simpered, “How much did you buy it for?” “Five hundred dollars.”

“Oh, mine cost seven hundred and fifty dollars,” Aunt Katie laughed with a sneer. Throughout dinner, Aunt Katie and Mom talked and argued across the table with the rest of us keeping silent as tension filled the air.

“Thank you, Keller. The food’s great…” Uncle Tom tried to break the tension in the air. “Oh, wait, you haven’t tried my cake yet,” said Aunt Katie. The passionfruit meringue was immediately served with Aunt Katie stressing on her excellent culinary skills and delicious taste of the cake. After tasting the cake, I had to admit that Aunt Katie had done a wonderful job. As I glanced at Clare and Wilson, I saw to my puzzlement, that they were giggling.

I could not understand what was so humorous until I caught sight of the cake knife that Aunt Katie was holding. I could hardly control my laughter as I read the words printed on the knife: Secret Recipe Dial-A-Cake.

Despite the reunion dinners with my relatives during each holiday, I have always enjoyed the holidays to the fullest the way holidays are meant to be and to me, the quarrelling and arguing between my mother and Aunt Katie is really just a harmless exchange of words.
