现代远程教育是以现代远程教育手段为主，多种媒体优化组合的教育方式。因特网(internet)的迅猛发展，使远程教育的手段有了质的飞跃。与面授教育相比，远程教育可以突破时空的限制；提供更多的学习机会，提升了学习效率；扩大教学规模，提高教学质量；降低教学的成本，解决了教育资源贫乏、实现资源共享的问题。
