所以心若止水，思之至深者，盖读书也。存书于心，又幸而遇时，尝假书于藏书之家，古之经达无所不读。又恐汩没陈迹之中，复随书指引，求字内之奇闻壮观以晓天地。恣观终南之秀，慨然如见古之豪士，细察畅春之婉，怅然如闻凄冷之音。已东览高山大野以自广，北顾奔流黄河以自达，西过秦汉之都以自醒，南及儋州汩泉以自静。无复求绮绣，朱缨宝饰之帽，腰白玉之烨然矣。见浮世之徒，自念不汲汲于富贵。又闻有功而谪者，吊日桃李不言下自成蹊。偶遇拥才不遇之人，劝之，世有伯乐，然后有千里马。宠辱不惊，心若止水，思之至深，再拜读书也。
