游戏是儿童创造力成长温床
电子游戏无处不在，全球销量持续升高，很多人呼吁将其视为一种艺术形式——但它仍然面临着一个形象问题。这一问题并非浅层现象，很多家长担心游戏毒害自己的孩子。但根据完美空间了解到的事实真相却是，游戏可能是成就你孩子最有利的媒介。
对孩子们来说，玩游戏早已不再是一种盲目、毫无意义的爱好，因为这种媒介的灵活性允许孩子从玩家蜕变为创作者。游戏开发者也对此表示赞同。“作为一种媒介，游戏总是吸引玩家发挥创造力。”游戏工作室Blackstaff Games首席创意官本杰明·德诺格约(Benjamin Donoghue)指出。“所谓创造力，指的是在限定规则内，最大限度探索自己能够做些什么。”目前，Blackstaff正在开发一款名为《DogBiscuit: The Quest for Crayons》的绘图移动游戏，该游戏允许玩家设计游戏世界的某些部分。
约书亚·戴维森(Joshua Davidson)，Night Zookeeper创始人兼总经理认为，创造力元素在儿童游戏中显得十分重要。“我们之所以创立Nigh Zookeeper，是为了鼓励孩子们不再局限于数字内容消费者的角色，并开始成为创作者。”他说。与《DogBiscuit》相仿，Night Zookeeper旗下应用和网站鼓励儿童为动物园画各种动物。这间工作室发现，邀请玩家提出创意有助于提升他们的沉浸感：如果允许他们自己讲述故事，他们就更乐于阅读故事。
随着时间推移，孩子们会变得更有耐心地参与创作。《小小大星球》(LittleBigPlanet)系列是十分有趣、画面具有吸引力的平台游戏，但与此同时，《小小大星球》还为玩家提供了一系列可用的关卡创作工具。截至目前，玩家在游戏内创作的关卡数量已超过900万个，而索尼旗下游戏工作室也开始从《小小大星球》的玩家中招聘创作者。
“《小小大星球》等游戏的美妙之处在于，你并不需要懂得如何编程，就能创造内容。”资深制作人汤姆·奥科内尔(Tom O’Connor)说。而事实上，对今天的孩子们来说，就连编程也不再是不可逾越的障碍。去年，独立开发者安德雷尔·沃里克在GameCity节期间授课，教孩子们使用一套名为Scratch的简单语言来制作游戏。“(孩子们)反响很积极。”她说。“在绝大多数日子里，教室都坐满了孩子，他们超级投入。”

12岁男孩萨姆·史密斯(Sam Smith)难以抑制创作冲动。史密斯曾在《小小大星球》和《乐高印第安纳琼斯2》中制作关卡，调整《星界边境》(Starbound)和《Garry’s Mod》的变量，更使用一套名为GameMaker：Studio的软件，创作了一款名为《Spacepants》的iOS游戏。
“我不去上学，而是制作游戏。”萨姆说。在英国，数千儿童都像萨姆那样在家接受教育，而游戏开发正是覆盖基础教育的方式之一：“它教我学习数学、语言。在开发《Spacepants》的过程中，我掌握了大量拼写和数学方面的知识。”
识字、算数和计算机技能并非游戏开发带给孩子们的全部利好。欧盟与其他机构联合成立了一项名为“无人落后”(No One Left Behind)的教育性活动，鼓励8周岁以上的儿童创作游戏，并提供免费移动工具Pocket Code的改编版本，让他们学习科学和历史等其他学科知识。GameCity主办方也加入了这项活动。萨姆的父亲乔纳森·史密斯是GameCity兼诺丁汉新落成的国家视频游戏中心(National Videogame Arcade)联合总监，据他透露，他的另一个儿子在学习修道院解体的历史知识时，创作了一款修道院模拟游戏。“他热爱游戏，所以对他来说，制作游戏是很自然的表达方式。”乔纳森·史密斯表示。
