I was lucky enough to have a chance to visit Hong Kong on National Day because the mainland has opened the individual tour quotas recently in our city. I really cherish this great opportunity to visit Hong Kong, which left me a deep impression. I expect to share my travel experience and pleasure with others.
I went to Hong Kong by the high-speed double-decker boat from Sanbu harbor in the afternoon on October 1.2003 with my mother-in-law and my wife. Although the speed of the boat was very fast, it seemed plain sailing before the boat reached Macau. After that, ocean waves became ferocious and the boat began to sway in the wind right-and-left. Many people got seasick, including me. Most people vomited especially when the boat was going to its berth. The next morning we went to visit the giant Buddha Statue in Lan Tau Island by subway. The 250-ton sculpture is the biggest outdoor bronze Buddha in the world. It is
about 34 meters in height with 268 steps leading to the platform. The statue was opened to the public in December 1993 after 10 years of construction. There are few statues anywhere in the world that will have such an intense and powerful affect on the imagination, as does the Giant Buddha gazing serenely upon the Po Lin (Precious Lotus) Monastery. The half-closed eyes, the all-knowing half-smiling lips, the inclination of the Buddha's head and even the raised right hand seemed to be delivering a blessing to all who visit. These combine to lend great depth of character, serenity and dignity to this extraordinary statue, whose very glance brings a calmness of being and introspection to those who are in the "sight" of those seemingly all-seeing eyes. We were astonished by the handcraft and grandiosity of the Buddha, while it remained a secret for us as how it was made.
Po Lin Monastery is the largest and most well known monastery on Lan Tau Island. It is known as the "Buddhist Kingdom in the South," serving as a Buddhist retreat. Po Lin was originally built during the Qing Dynasty by three Zen masters in 1920 as a small stone hut shrine dedicated to Buddha. In 1924, it was officially renamed "Po Lin Monastery." Since the 1930s, the monastery started to expand. The present buildings date from 1921 and 1970. The main temples have brightly painted vermillion interiors with dragons and other Chinese mythical figures on the ceilings. With the number of monks increasing under the guidance of the Venerable Buddhism, the monastery also has gradually evolved to its present state, which has a grand building of many different halls and function rooms. The entrance of the monastery is marked by the arch-like monument. Radiating from the main hall are temples and abodes serving other gods like the "Four Kings" in Welto Temple
My cousin led us to have a vegetarian meal in the temple, which is often eaten by the monks. We entered the local restaurant and had a dinner without any meats and oil in
the dishes and soup, which was only made from vegetable oil. Everyone felt the newness of the vegetarian meal. A couple of foreigners beside us sang high praise of the dishes. I noticed the wife didn’t know how to use chopsticks.
After lunch, we went back to the supermarket in Tung Chung railway station by bus. The supermarket in Hong Kong seems much bigger than those ones in the mainland, in which the products are more abundant. We took the double-decker bus to our next destination－the peak tower, where you can skim through the panorama of Hong Kong Island and Kowloon. It is a great pleasure to have a bird eye's view of the world-famous Victoria Harbor and the Hong Kong skyline. Victoria peak is 554 meters in height above sea level and it is the highest peak in Hong Kong. The optimum site of watching scenery is the sightseeing stand in “Reaching the Clouds Pavilion” and “Lion Pavilion” near peak trams. The night scenery will leave you with an unforgettable impression.
The third day
We visited ocean park－the most beautiful scenic spot in Hong Kong, Located on the southern side of Hong Kong Island. The park is one of the largest recreational places in Southeast Asia, covering an area of 170 acres. Ocean Park consists of lowland and headland area, which are connected by cable car.
We entered the park from the front gate and went to the amazing birds’ theatre to watch the performance of rare birds, such as parrots, Harris hawks, and eagle owls. They are the stars of Ocean Park. I was amazed by their excellent performance. They swooped overhead, displayed their intelligence and natural abilities for all to enjoy. I was also astonished that the drillmasters and the rare birds can live in peace with each other for so many years.
We then took the cable car to the headland area, which with Ocean Park is located on two different sides of a mountain and overlooking the sea. The cable cars are not only great transportation but also one of guests’ favourite attractions, which connected “the lowlands” from lowland garden to “the headlands at marine land.”
After reaching the destination, we visited the Adventure Land in the headland area. Headland area:
We watched the mine train; we saw the people enter the Wild West and hop aboard a train that’s out of control. The dragon may loop, but this one had the drops and the turns to put their stomachs in their throats repeatedly.
Space Wheel is used to test your astronaut skills on this raising, vertical orbit experience.
Raging river: this river is wild and you have to ride it. Your boat takes you through narrow ravines, twisting turns and an impossible vertical drop reaching speeds of over 58 km per hour. The tourists cool off and laugh like crazy.
We took Ocean Park escalator to everyplace in the Adventure Land area. The escalator stretched from Pacific Pier on down to Middle Kingdom and Bird Paradise, traversing Adventure Land. It’s one of the world’s longest escalators.
We then went to the Marine land area:
1. Atoll reef: it is one of the most popular attractions of Ocean Park. The atoll reef will leave you great memories as it reveals the mysteries of the deep. Travel to the depths of the reef and discover over 2000 fishes from 250 species, including an over 80 years old and 7 feet long giant grouper and 22 napoleon fish.
2. Shark aquarium: Most sharks are harmless to people, but not all. Here you will come to face with 70 sharks from 35 species as you travel through Asia’s first underwater tunnel. Watch sharks as they glide overhead, and learn about each species,
including the rare species Ocean Park has been able to breed in captivity. You’ll never be so close to a shark again.
3. Ocean theatre: we watched the show at three o’clock in the afternoon. The stand was full of people and we had no choice but sitting in the seats of the theatre, which was without a roof to prevent the sunlight. It was shining and the temperature was very high so that most of us could not afford the torrid weather. The intelligent dolphins and adorable sea lions teamed up with their trainers to amaze the crowds. It is a huge popular marine mammal spectacular with so many amazing flips and stunning tricks. We enjoyed a very exciting performance.
4. Ocean park tower: An extraordinary vista opens up as you rise 72 meters and enjoy the stunning views of South China Sea. Gently rotating through 360 degrees, it’s an awe-inspiring view from the top of the tower.
5. The abyss turbo drop: it is Ocean Park’s latest thrill, which can lift you up, and drops you straight down in free fall, making 5 seconds seems like a lifetime.
6. The dragon: the travelers can twist, turn, and loop in this steel maze designed to hurl you at hurricane speeds. It’s Hong Kong’s roller coaster experience.
After finished visiting the headland area, we went down to the lowland garden by the cable cars.
