为了悼念利迪策村和全世界所有在法西斯侵略战争中死难的儿童，反对帝国主义战争贩子虐杀和毒害儿童，保障儿童权利，1949年11月国际民主妇女联合会在莫斯科召开执委会，正式决定每年6月1日为全世界少年儿童的节日，即国际儿童节。
新中国成立后，中央人民政府政务院于1949年12月23日作出决定，规定6月1日为新中国的儿童节，同时宣布废除旧中国国民党政府1931起实行的4月4日为儿童节的规定。
目前，各国政府普遍关注儿童的未来，保护儿童的权益。联合国1990年通过的《儿童权利公约》，我国是参与制定国和签约国之一。在批准《儿童权利公约》的同一年，我国颁布了《中华人民共和国未成年人保护法》，这对维护少年儿童的权益起到了积极的作用。
为切实保障儿童健康成长，中国立法、司法、政府各有关部门以及社会团体都建立了相应的机构。在全国人民代表大会和中国人民政治协商会议内分别设有负责妇女儿童保障的立法和监督机构。国务院下设的妇女儿童工作委员会，负责协调和推动政府有关部门做好维护儿童权益的保障工作，为儿童办实事。

六一儿童节的由来
六一儿童节了，小朋友们一定会穿上漂亮的衣服，兴高彩烈地度过自己的节日。可是，你知道“六、一”儿童节是怎么来的呢？让我来告诉你吧！ 1949年12月，国际民主妇女联合会在莫斯科举行会议。会上，中国和世界各国劳动妇女代表，揭露了帝国主义和各国反动派迫害儿童的罪行。为了保障全世界各国儿童的生存权、保健权、教育权等基本权利，会议规定了每年的6月1日为国际儿童节。1949年12月23日，中华人民共和国中央人民政府政务院发布通令，规定“六、一”国际儿童节为中国儿童的节日。
六一国际儿童节是全世界儿童的节日，也是全世界爱好和平，为争取儿童生存、健康和受教育的权利而斗争的日子。1925年，“国际儿童幸福促进会”举行第一次国际大会，发表了有关儿童福利问题的原则以后，一些国家先后有了儿童节的规定，如美国定为10月31日，英国定为7月1日。
第二次世界大战结束后，世界各地经济萧条，成千上万的工人失业，过着饥寒交迫的生活。儿童的处境更糟，有的得了传染病，一批批地死去；有的则被迫当童工，受尽折磨，生活和生命得不到保障。为了给全世界儿童争取生存、保障和受教育的权利，加强各国儿童的友谊，国际民主妇女联合会于1949年11月在莫斯科召开了执委会，正式决定6月1日为国际儿童节。
我国儿童节，早期为每年的4月4日，是1931年根据中华慈幼协会的建议设立的。新中国成立后，劳动人民成为国家的主人，广大少年儿童也成了国家的小主人，为了培养广大儿童的国际主义思想，1949年12月，中央人民政府政务院发出通令，废除旧的“4·4”儿童节，将6月1日作为我国的儿童节。与“六一”国际儿童节统一起来。从此，每年的这一天，全国少年儿童都要举行各种活动，欢庆自己的节日。许多公共娱乐场所特地为孩子们免费开放，各机关、团体、企业在这天还向本单位职工的子女和幼儿园的小朋友馈赠礼物，这是孩子们最愉快的一天。

国际儿童节（又称儿童节，InternationalChildrensDay），它是保障世界各国儿童的生存权、保健权和受教育权，为了改善儿童的生活，为了反对虐杀儿童和毒害儿童的节日。大多数国家通常定为每年的6月1日。目前，各国政府普遍关注儿童的未来，保护儿童的权益。联合国1990年通过的《儿童权利公约》，我国是参与制定国和签约国之一。在批准《儿童权利公约》的同一年，我国颁布了《中华人民共和国未成年人保护法》，这对维护少年儿童的权益起到了积极的作用。
二、由来
儿童是国家的未来的主人翁，因此，如何提供儿童一个良好的家庭、社会或是学习环境，乃是世界各国致力的目标。1925年8月在瑞士日内瓦召开的关于儿童福利的国际会议上，首次提出了国际儿童节的概念。
这次大会有54个国家的爱护儿童代表，聚集在瑞士日内瓦举行儿童幸福国际大会，通过《日内瓦保障儿童宣言》。宣言中，对于儿童精神上应有的享受、贫苦儿童的救济、儿童危险工作的避免、儿童谋生机会的获得，以及怎样救养儿童等问题，均有热烈讨论。
自此次大会后，一方面藉以鼓舞儿童，让儿童感到幸福、快乐，另一方面也为引起社会重视与爱护，各国政府都先后订定儿童节。

目前世界上许多国家都将6月1日定为儿童的节日，尤其是在社会主义国家。在欧美国家，儿童节的日期各不相同，而且往往很少举行社会公众性的庆祝活动。因此往往有人误解为只有社会主义国家才将6月1日定为儿童节。事实上，近年来，美国的一些组织也开始考虑将儿童节定在6月1日。
