My View on DUI Offences
Every year, thousands upon thousands of people are killed or injured in road accidents. A large proportion of these are alcohol-related. Studies show that the use of alcohol results in decreased driving ability and increased risk of car crashes. People who drive under the influence of alcohol are nicknamed “highway killers”.
Unfortunately, DUI remains a serious problem in China today in spite of some progress. Why is it so difficult to stop “highway killing”? What makes the DUI offenders reckless of the risk? I think the first reason may be the drivers’failure to recognize the consequence. When they drink before driving, they think “just one drink won’t hurt,” turning a blind eye to the danger. The second but more important reason is the drivers’disregard for the law. They totally ignore their responsibility for road safety and are not deterred by the legal punishment because it is not severe enough.
It is time to take critical steps to prevent DUI offences. Apart from an education campaign to call for responsible driving and raise public awareness, there is an urgent need for more effective supervision, such as more frequent random breath testing to spot DUI offenders and stiffer penalties including revocation of driving licenses, heavy fines and even jail sentences. Drunk Driving
Most countries in the world have harsh laws aimed at penalizing drunk driving. But until recent years, drunk driving was rampant in China, due to weak legal provisions and enforcement. The past decade has witnessed tremendous increase in the number of motor vehicles, most of which are private cars. The lack of legal traditions targeted at drunk driving and people’s lack of legal awareness have given rise alarming traffic casualties as a result of drunk driving.
Drunk driving has created traffic accidents whose implications extend far beyond the traffic realm. In many cases, the drunken drivers are high-ranking government officials or wealthy businessmen who could use their influence, privileges, connections and bribes to get off unpunished. This has occasioned serious social problems because justice is not done and the value of the lives of ordinary people is not duly respected. Those problems in turn contribute to the already widening inequalities between the poor and the rich in the Chinese society, to such an extent that only the institution and the enforcement of the most stringent laws can answer to the rising public complaints.
According to the law introduced since May 1 this year, anybody guilty of drunk driving would be severely fined, subjected to a 6-month detention, and deprived of his driving license. No one can have failed to notice the fact that Internet rumors have been a grave problem confronting us. Groundless allegations flood the Internet. Internet rumors will definitely result in severe consequences if we keep turning a blind eye to them. First and foremost, made-up scandals directly infringe upon citizens' rights, affecting their daily life and ruining their public image. Besides, the dissemination of such rumors as those about social or natural disasters causes panic and disorder among

No one can have failed to notice the fact that the past years witnessed an increasing number of volunteers in China. In the wake of that, volunteers have manifested themselves in the aid and relief work in areas hit by such natural disasters as earthquakes and droughts, as well as in such events as Shanghai Expo.
Such volunteering activities are significant in many ways. First and foremost, they have undoubtedly contributed considerably to this society. As a newly emerging force, volunteers actually present collectivism and the virtue of helping others for fun in a new form. Secondly, by working as volunteers, the younger generation, especially college students, can broaden their horizons, enhance their capacities and associate themselves better with the society.
