My View on DUI Offences

Every year, thousands upon thousands of people are killed or injured in road accidents. A large proportion of these are alcohol-related. Studies show that the use of alcohol results in decreased driving ability and increased risk of car crashes. People who drive under the influence of alcohol are nicknamed “highway killers”.

Unfortunately, DUI remains a serious problem in China today in spite of some progress. Why is it so difficult to stop “highway killing”? What makes the DUI offenders reckless of the risk? I think the first reason may be the drivers’failure to recognize the consequence. When they drink before driving, they think “just one drink won’t hurt,” turning a blind eye to the danger. The second but more important reason is the drivers’disregard for the law. They totally ignore their responsibility for road safety and are not deterred by the legal punishment because it is not severe enough.

It is time to take critical steps to prevent DUI offences. Apart from an education campaign to call for responsible driving and raise public awareness, there is an urgent need for more effective supervision, such as more frequent random breath testing to spot DUI offenders and stiffer penalties including revocation of driving licenses, heavy fines and even jail sentences. Only with these measures taken, can we prevent more tragedies from happening.

Drunk Driving

Most countries in the world have harsh laws aimed at penalizing drunk driving. But until recent years, drunk driving was rampant in China, due to weak legal provisions and enforcement. The past decade has witnessed tremendous increase in the number of motor vehicles, most of which are private cars. The lack of legal traditions targeted at drunk driving and people’s lack of legal awareness have given rise alarming traffic casualties as a result of drunk driving.

Drunk driving has created traffic accidents whose implications extend far beyond the traffic realm. In many cases, the drunken drivers are high-ranking government officials or wealthy businessmen who could use their influence, privileges, connections and bribes to get off unpunished. This has occasioned serious social problems because justice is not done and the value of the lives of ordinary people is not duly respected. Those problems in turn contribute to the already widening inequalities between the poor and the rich in the Chinese society, to such an extent that only the institution and the enforcement of the most stringent laws can answer to the rising public complaints.

According to the law introduced since May 1 this year, anybody guilty of drunk driving would be severely fined, subjected to a 6-month detention, and deprived of his driving license. I am totally in favor of this law because it has dramatically reduced cases of drunk driving. Having committed drunk driving, wealthy businessmen, high-ranking government officials, and celebrated musicians have been arrested, sued for criminal offenses, and sentenced. All these indicate that no one is above law, which ruthlessly enforced, would benefit all of us.

Drunk Driving{

Nobody could have failed to notice the fact that drunk driving has become a grave problem in China in the past few years. Reports are often heard about deaths and injuries resulting from drunk driving. Actually, the phenomenon has been so widespread that it has caused nationwide concern.

A number of factors might have led to this problem, but the following are the critical ones. First, as a nation known for wine and drinking, Chinese have the custom of urging guests to drink more and regard it as a sign of hospitality. Some even encourage drivers to drink. Secondly, the boom of Chinese economy in the past decades has brought along a sharp increase in the number of private cars in this country. However, many drivers are not fully aware of the danger of driving after drinking. Last but not least, laws and regulations regarding drunk driving were not severe enough in the past.

To our relief(欣慰的是), we can see pertinent(有关的) laws and regulations have been worked out and enforced to punish those who drive after drinking. However, I believe that more can be done to eliminate drunk driving. For one thing, severe laws can be made and put into effect. For another, the public should be educated about the harmfulness of drunk driving and the importance of traffic safety

Recently, whether students should be divided to science students and art ones is under heated discussion among the public.

Some are in favor of the division. They claim that students will have more time to concentrate on their favorite subjects, which leads to high efficiency in study. They tend to believe that few people are talented in both science and art, so it is better that they make a choice between the two. In addition, the division can considerably reduce students’ pressure from study.

On the contrary, others object to the former opinion. They suppose only when students learn both science and art can they be educated into comprehensive students, laying a solid foundation for the future study after entering college. Besides, it is too early for students to decide which field to major in during high school.

From my perspective, I reckon that it may have more advantages than disadvantages to learn both science and art subjects. Although it will cost us more time and energy, it’s beneficial in the long run, for society is in bad need of general talents rather than specialized ones. Even if one can major in one particular field, he or she can wait till entering college.

My View on Internet Rumors

No one can have failed to notice the fact that Internet rumors have been a grave problem confronting us. Groundless allegations flood the Internet. Taking a look around, we can find examples too many to enumerate: scandals of both famous and unknown people, fake forecast of earthquakes and the like.

Internet rumors will definitely result in severe consequences if we keep turning a blind eye to them. First and foremost, made-up scandals directly infringe upon citizens' rights, affecting their daily life and ruining their public image. Besides, the dissemination of such rumors as those about social or natural disasters causes panic and disorder among

society. Last but not least, the spread of rumors on the Internet will undermine the credibility of the net to such a degree that people will no longer trust it in the future.

Given the seriousness of this problem, effective steps must be adopted before the situation deteriorates. First, it is imperative that laws and regulations be enacted and executed to stop the production and

transmission of Internet rumors. For instance, real-name system should be introduced as soon as possible. Secondly, people should be educated to identify and reject groundless allegations. With severe laws and a conscious public, it will only be a matter of time for Internet rumors to be eradicated.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed thirty minutes to write a composition on the topic “Volunteering Activities”. You should write at least 150 words, and base your composition on the outline below:

Volunteering Activities

No one can have failed to notice the fact that the past years witnessed an increasing number of volunteers in China. The largest and most notable group of volunteers might be those working for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. In the wake of that, volunteers have manifested themselves in the aid and relief work in areas hit by such natural disasters as earthquakes and droughts, as well as in such events as Shanghai Expo.

Such volunteering activities are significant in many ways. First and foremost, they have undoubtedly contributed considerably to this society. As a newly emerging force, volunteers actually present collectivism and the virtue of helping others for fun in a new form. Secondly, by working as volunteers, the younger generation, especially college students, can broaden their horizons, enhance their capacities and associate themselves better with the society. Of course there exist some problems with these

volunteering activities, such as lack of training and loose management of volunteers, but we have reasons to believe that they can be solved in the near future.

Personally, I didn’t work as a volunteer in the earthquake or the Olympics for this reason or that. Nor did I have a chance to work for Shanghai Expo. But I am indeed touched by those voluntary deeds and I am determined to work as a volunteer for environmental protection from now on, which I deem of great importance nowadays.
