青春不是年华，而是心境；青春不是桃面、丹唇、柔膝，而是深沉的意志、恢宏的想像、炽热的感情；青春是生命的深泉涌流。
青春气贯长虹，勇锐盖过怯懦，进取压倒苟安。如此锐气，二十后生有之，六旬男子则更多见。年岁有加，并非垂老；理想丢弃，方堕暮年。
岁月悠悠，衰微只及肌肤；热忱抛却，颓唐必致灵魂。忧烦、惶恐、丧失自信，定使心灵扭曲，意气如灰。
无论年届花甲，抑或二八芳龄，心中皆有生命之欢乐，奇迹之诱惑，孩童般天真久盛不衰。
人的心灵应如浩淼瀚海，只有不断接纳美好、希望、欢乐、勇气和力量的百川，才能青春永驻、风华长存。

Youth means a tempera-mental predominance of courage over timidity, of theappetite for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals.
Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spring back to dust.
Whether 60 or 16, there is in every human being’s heart the lure of wonder, the unfailing childlike appetite of what’s next and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station: so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from the Infinite, so long are you young.
When the aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old, even at 20, but as long as your aerials are up, to catch waves of optimism, there is hope you may die young at 80.
多年前，曾读过一段简短却颇具意境的美文，至今印象深刻。每当过生日的时候，总会不知不觉地想到它，这就是在日本曾经名噪一时的散文诗《青春》。
《青春》（Youth）的作者是美国犹太诗人塞缪尔·厄尔曼（Samuel Ullman），这首散文诗的原文是这样的：

1840年，塞缪尔·乌尔曼生于德国犹太人家庭。
1851年，11岁，为躲避欧洲排犹的歧视，随父母途径法国来到美国密西西比州吉布森港口定居。
1851年～1860年，作为家庭长子，帮助父亲经营杂货店，期间上学接受教育，但是放弃了上大学的机会。
1861年5月～约1866年，参加美国内战的南方部队，两次受伤造成一只耳朵失聪，后来因此导致了永久性耳聋。
1867年～1883年，1867年移居到密西西比州那切兹，同一犹太富商家长女结婚建立家庭，并开始经商。并积极投身城市公共事务和宗教事务，数次当选市参议员。
1884年～1901年，44岁，携妻子和6个孩子搬到新兴的伯明翰小城，寄望于寻求经济状况的改善。期间积极参与城市多项公共事务，热心慈善事业，在伯明翰教育委员会工作达十八年，期间和妻子为山区的人捐建了医院。
1892年～1901年，担任伯明翰教育委员会主席。期间极力促成建立了一所伯明翰的黑人中学，当时美国南方这样的中学很少。他1900年开办的职业中学也广受欢迎。需要说明的是，直到1915年，美国南方的佐治亚州、密西西比州、南卡罗莱纳州以及路易斯安那诸州还没有供黑人儿童就学的中学。
约1902年，因失聪加剧，不得不歇业退休，潜心从事散文、诗歌的创作，主题涉及爱情、自然、宗教、家庭、友谊和青春等。

1950年代前后，麦克阿瑟将军日本担任占领军最高盟军司令期间，将该诗抄录下来，挂在其东京司令部办公室的墙壁上自咏自励，还在演说中时常援引诗文中的华章警句。由于麦克阿瑟在日本政要中卓越的影响力，很快就使得该诗风靡了全日本，成为日本全民上下重建国家、重塑民生的精神动力。
1993年，由“日本青春协会”（日本喜爱该作品的人组成了一个组织，该组织由超过1000名商人和企业家组成）和美国热爱塞缪尔·乌尔曼的人，将诗人的故居买下来，建成博物馆（阿拉巴马州伯明翰市15大街2150号），由伯明翰市阿拉巴马大学管理。1994年3月21日该博物馆正式对外开放。

说到这里，必然要提及该散文诗的汉译文本情况。现在，这首诗的中译文本非常多，在网上粗略统计，差不多有10余种。但是流传最广的，是带有这样一段译文的版本：“青春不是年华，而是心境；青春不是桃面、丹唇、柔膝，而是深沉的意志，恢宏的想象，炙热的恋情；青春是生命的深泉在涌流。”经过反复查证，方知这最为贴近又意境唯美的译文出自著名诗人、翻译家王佐良先生。其次是，台版文献中的翻译文本，由台湾文源书局出版的尹让辙的译文。再有，就是杨向明的译文，译自美国《READING》杂志，其余的较多为文学翻译爱好者的版本了。但是总体来看，王佐良先生的译文诠释感人至深，不尽忠于原作，而且强烈地表达了王佐良先生强调的“以诗译诗”的翻译原则，深入原语与目标语所处的文化，以尽量接近对等，如丝丝绵雨浸润着全诗的意境。
