家长方面;

Art is visible. However, everything one sees is filtered through certain conditions, some of them historical, and others, natural. The historical conditions include the material which is used — oil, colors, and the canvas; second, a certain style. There can be a general style, for example, the style of Impressionism, or a particular style, for example, the individual ways in which two painters, both impressionists, paint. The natural conditions include certain unchanging psychological laws of sight, for instance, the effects of colors or optical illusions.

The conditions of art are nothing but a particular way of interpreting reality. To understand this, one can examine the difference between the classical Greek and the classical Egyptian styles. For the Greeks, the reality of the visible was given by the perspective and the situation in which the object appears; for that reason they presented a person in his individual movements. For the

In January 2013, Sam Bloom was on a family holiday with husband, Cameron, and their three young boys. After a morning in the sea they discovered the hotel had a rooftop platform and all went up the to enjoy their surroundings. Suddenly Cameron heard a tremendous crash. He around and Sam was gone—as was the safety rail(栏杆) she had been against. Sam fell into a deep depression after the fall from the roof left her paralyzed(瘫痪的) from the chest down. Three months later, as they were heading home from Sam’s parents, Noah, her middle son, a baby bird that had fallen to the ground. So they it up and took it home. They called her Penguin because she looked like a penguin. She was just very at two or three weeks old. She would have to be fed every two hours, but they decided rescuing this little bird would be a thing to do together.

Penguin brought joy back to the family. Sam loved having Penguin around because she was like Penguin would rest on Sam’s lap or on her shoulder. Sam could finally herself without feeling guilty—she would talk to Penguin; she would to her behind Cameron and tell her how she was feeling. Some mornings Penguin would just run down the hall and jump up into bed, her way into the quilt and then roll over and sleep. Penguin had some —she was not toilet-trained, and the house got quite messy. As she grew older, Penguin did sleep outside, but at six o’clock in the morning she’d be at the door, with a special that meant, “Let me in!”

As her grew, Penguin stayed away for longer periods. When she was a year old, she disappeared for six weeks. But on the little son’s 13th birthday, Penguin made a visit. A year ago, she left again and hasn’t been seen a freedom of her own. Sam made a new she took up boating and even made the Australian Para-boating Team. She is out of the and in the water and back in nature.

Over the two years, Cameron took about 14,000 pictures of Penguin, which have been collected in a book called Penguin Bloom. Penguin rescued the family as much as they rescued her. Sam got it, thanks to her family, exercise and yes, the friendship of a bird. Angels come in all shapes and sizes!

Father’s Garden

My father was always a good gardener. One of my earliest memories is standing without shoes in the freshly tilled(翻耕的) soil, my hands blackened from digging in the ground.

As a child, I loved following Dad around in the garden. I remember Dad pushing the tiller(耕作机) ahead in perfectly straight lines. Dad loved growing all sorts of things yellow and green onions, watermelons almost as big as me, rows of yellow corn, and our favorite—red tomatoes.

As I grew into a teenager, I didn’t get so excited about gardening with Dad. Instead of magical land of possibility, it had turned into some kind of prison. As Dad grew older, his love for gardening never disappeared. After all the kids were grown and had started families of their own, Dad turned to gardening like never before. Even when he was diagnosed with cancer, he still took care of his garden. But then, the cancer, bit by bit, invaded his body. I had to do the things he used to do. What really convinced me that Dad was dying was the state of his garden that year. The rows and rows of multicolored vegetables were gone. Too tired to weed them, he simply let them be. He only planted tomatoes.

For the first few years after he died, I couldn’t even bear to look at anyone’s garden without having strong memories pour over me like cold water from a bucket. Three years ago, I decided to plant my own garden and started out with just a few tomatoes. That morning, after breaking up a fair amount of soil, something caught the corner of my eye and I had to smile. It was my eight-year-old son Nathan, happily playing in the freshly tilled soil.

41. Why did the author like the garden when he was a child? A. He wanted to be a garden-crazy like h is father. B. He loved being in the garden with his father. C. The garden was full of his favorite food. D. The garden was just freshly tilled.

44. Why did the author start his garden with tomatoes?

A. He wanted to honor his father. B. His son liked the fields of tomatoes. C. He only knew how to grow tomatoes. D. He thought tomatoes were easy to manage.

Sure. you know their names, possibly better t han you know the name of the street you live on. When the need comes, these names roll off our tongues like they were our own brothers. I am writing about the famous Webster’s Dictionary and Roget’s Thesaurus.

When it refers to Webster’s Dictionary, Many people can respond immediately: Noah Webster. We are aware that he is the father of the dictionary. But who was he? What did he do for a living? When did he live?

Noah was born in 1758, graduated from Yale University in 1778. and later graduated from law school. He produced the first American dictionary in 1806 and published his important work An American Dictionary of the English Language in l828. His interests led him to be a lexicographer (词典编纂者), textbook editor, author, Bible translator and spelling reformer. He also produced a large number of writings in medicine, mythology (神话), and the relationship of European and Asian languages. In addition, he founded the first New York daily newspaper in 1793. He died in 1843.

Roget's Thesaurus, it gives us the chance to learn about Roget, the man-Peter Mark Roget, And who? What? When?

Englishman Peter Roget, MD, was born in 1779. He studied medicine and mathematics at the University of Edinburgh. He is considered as the creator of the first-ever thesaurus It has been called one of the three most important books ever printed, along with the Bible and Webster s Dictionary. He began his work Thesaurus of English Words and Phrases in 1805 but did not publish it until 1852-47 years later. In his lifetime, he became a famous lecturer and writer on anatomy(解剖学 ), geology(地质学), bees, and more . When Roget died in 1869 at age 90, his son, John , took over the Thesaurus arid he gradually expanded.

So now you know the two famous books. Not e nough information? As well-known humorist James Thurber suggested in the title of his 1941 magazine short story about baseball, You Could Look It Up!2017高中期中考试英语英语总结

Dear John,

My name is Amber and I want to share my story with you because what you've shared about life and positive energy has changed my life. This past year has been one of the hardest for me. I felt I was stuck in a position that had nothing to do with what I wanted to do with my life. In January, after two years of being together, my boyfriend left me.

I read your blog every morning as I drink my coffee at work, but it wasn't until this March that I told myself "no more negativit y" as you taught readers in your blog.

Since then I've got into new habits at work to keep my energy positive. When people walk in the front door, I'm the first face they see, so I smile big when

I say "good morning" to them, especially on Mondays. Instead of waiting for someone to ask me for help, I offer it with an open mind. The CEO noticed my change and offered me the executive assistant position that I wanted.

One of the bigges t things I've taken to heart from your blog is changing my opinions on my job. Yes, it was not an important position, but when I was passionate (热情的) about it, I could make my life fulfilling.

All in all, I have to thank you somehow for having the passion to help others because it truly is inspiring to me. So thank you so much, John. My life has changed because your words pointed me in the right direction, Take care! Sincerely ,

Why do we laugh and get amusement from so many different things, from puns (双关语) to pratfalls? Why are some things funny to some people and not to others? How is that while a successful joke can cause pleasure,a sick one can cause serious harm?

Over the centuries, various scholars have attempted to produce a universally agreed-upon theory of humor.Plato and Aristotle introduced the superiority(优越感) theory, the idea that people laugh at the misfortune of others.Their theory seems to explain teasing, but it doesn’t work well for knock-knock jokes.Sigmund

Freud argued for his relief theory, the concept that humor is a way for people to release psychological tension and reveal their inner fears and desires. His theory works well for dirty jokes, less well for most puns.

The majority of humor experts today agree with the incongruity(不一致) theory, the idea that humor arises when there’s a gap between what people expect to happen and what actually happens.Incongruity has a lot going for it — jokes with unexpected funny lines, for example, fit well. But scientists have found that in comedy, unexpectedness is overvalued. With the goal of developing a new, more satisfactory explanation,I produced “the gentle violation(违背)theory”,the idea that humor arises when something seems wrong or threatening, but is actually OK or safe.A dirty joke, for example, trades on mor al or social violations, but it’s only going to get a laugh if the person listening is open enough to consider the subject OK to talk about.Similarly, puns can be seen as language violations that still make grammatical sense.

And while most humor theories have struggled to account for tickling (挠痒痒),or just avoided the phenomenon altogether,my theory accounts for even this kind of laughter.Tickling involves violating(违背) someone’s physical space in a gentle way.People can’t tickle themselves — because it isn’ t a violation. 52. What is the author’s attitude towards Plato and Aristotle’s theory?

A. Disapproving B. Approving C. Uncaring D. Unclear 53 According to Sigmund Freud’s theory,we can infer that __________ . A. people will laugh when they see others suffer

B. telling dirty jokes is a relief of one’ s nervous feelings C. unexpectedness can explain how humor works D. tickling doesn’t involve psychological tension

54. According to the author, why are some things funny to some people but not to others?

A. Because the sense of humor varies greatly from person to person. B. Because people have different expectations for the same thing. C. Because some people lack the sense of safety deep in their heart. D. Because people’s understanding of violation is different. 55.What is the author’s main purpose of writing this passage? A. To draw people’s attention to the research of humor. B. To criticize people’s misunderstanding about humor. C. To explain what exactly causes people to laugh. D. To prove the sense of humor can be developed.

Only 1 in 10 people could or would perform CPR if someone needed it, with most people choosing instead to wait for emergency services to help. But unfortunately emergency services come too late for more than 140,000 people a year.

So what’s the solution? How can we increase the confidence and skills of a nation so that we are all ready and capable of delivering first aid to our families, friends, co-workers and even strangers in the street? Many believe we should begin by teaching first aid to children in schools. In Wales and Ireland, this is already the case with first aid being a compulsory part of the curriculum, but in Scotland and here in England, this is not the case.

Maisie Parkinson, aged just 11, learned basic first aid skills during lessons at Derby High School and put them to use when her mother Rachel dropped a scalding hot drink on her head. Although the injury wasn’t life or death. Maisie knew enough to cool the burn under cold running water and remove her mother’s ring to stop swelling . She stayed calm throughout, proving that

she has the confidence and the ability to act quickly in an emergency!

The Red Cross believes that every child aged between five and 11 should be taught basic first aid, which helps them to stay safe and save lives in emergency situations. It will ensure that from the day they learn their new skills, we have a new culture of first aid, with a whole generation of children growing up with the skills and confidence to save a life.

Children are less likely to experience the "Bystander Effect". So if you faint , have a heart attack or fall and break a bone and if there is a child present you are much more likely to get the help you need.

By teaching children life-saving skills they will always have them ready to help their classmates and families and will take these skills with them whenever they go for the rest of their lives.

When babies are just 3 to 4 months old, they can pick out images differences that adults never noticed. But after the age of four months, the infants lose their duper-sight abilities, reports Susana Martinez-Conde for Science America.

The reasons why adults-or even babies older than about 8 months - don't have it is that over time our brains learn what differences are important to notice. For example, when adults and look out at the images of a snail, they typically say that glossy(光滑的)snail A and glossy snail B are the most similar. The matte(表面无光泽的)snail C seems to be different. But a baby can tell that snail B and snail C are actually more similar. Though it is hard for adults to seem snail A stands out from the others- The surface of this snails reflects very different lighting conditions babies are more sensitive to that image difference.

Researchers based in Tokyo, Japan explored this ability of very young children by testing 42 infants ranging in age from 3 months to eight months. Since these babies couldn't yet talk the researchers tracked their perception of images based on how long the babies stared at each image. Previous research ahs shown that when the a baby see something they consider new , they stare

longer , objects they are familiar with, only a passing glance.

The time differences in gaze showed that the three-and four-months-old babies noticed the lightning difference and were less impressed with differences in the surface-weather the images were glossy or matte. But by the time the infants are 7 to 8 months old , their vision is closer to that of adults and they can no longer see the difference. Scientists call this type of change of perceptual narrowing, meaning that attention for classes and that people can't miss out on certain differences. It's a normal part of the development of the brain and the vision.

The loss of sensitivity isn't anything to mourn, though. The babies are keying in a difference that amounts to light changes, not a change and object itself. Adults instead recognize that this is the same snail , even if the environment around it has shifted in someway. Ignoring that relatively meaningless differences is a way that human tune our perception to our environment, allowing us to navigate it efficiently and successfully," Martinez-Conde writes for Science America. "even if it's left a large part of reality forever outside our reach." She adds.

63.Adults don’t have super A.adults do not care about normal things

B.they have had eyesight unimportant differences

C.they have had eyesight after they grow up

D.babies are good at identifying unfamiliar things

64.Babies can tell the snails apart according to A.the colors of the snails’ surface

B.the light conditions in the laboratory

C.the degree of familiarity with the images

D.the amount of light reflected by snails’ surface

65.According to the last paragraph, what can be inferred from Marinez-Conde’s words?

A. It is necessary for humans to evolve at a fast speed.

B. It is a pity that humans cannot see small light changes.

C. People can find reality with the changing of environment.

D. The loss of sensitivity results from environmental adaptions.

66.What is the purpose of the passage?

A. To show the steps of a new study.

B. To present the result of a new study

C. To explain the purpose of a new study.

D. To stress the importance of a new study.

When I told my father that I was moving to Des Moines, Iowa, he told me about the only time he had been there. It was in the 1930s, when he was an editor if the literary magazine of Southern Methodist University(SMU)in Dallas, Texas. He also worked as a professor at SMU, and there was a girl student in his class who suffered from a serious back disease. She couldn;t afford the operation because her family was poor.

Her mother ran a boardinghouse in Galveston, a seaside town near Houston, Texas. She was cleaning out the attic(阁楼)one day when she came across an old dusty manuscript(手稿). On its top page were the words, ―By O. Henry‖. It was a nice story, and she sent it to her daughter at SMU, who showed it to my father. My father had never read the story before, but it sounded like
