Shylock is a Tragic Figure in the Merchant of Venice
Shylock is a typical case of art in Shakespeare’s dramas. The author paid many attentions to describe the personal characteristics of Shylock from different aspects. When we talk about Shylock’s characteristics in The Merchant of Venice, the first impression comes into our mind is that he is a fierce, cruel, voracious and miserly man. It is no doubt that there are many weaknesses of human nature on Shylock. Nevertheless, Shylock is also a tragic figure in The Merchant of Venice who represented most Jews and was discriminated by Christians, was betrayed by his only daughter and been an isolated man.
First of all, Shylock represented those most Jews who were discriminated by Christians at the beginning of the 16th centuries. It is obvious that conflict between Jews and Christians appeared at that period. The story is mainly centre on furious conflicts between Shylock and Antonio. Antonio used to hurl insults at Shylock by crude words regardless of whatever the circumstances are. What’s worse, Shylock was stroke and kicked by Antonio for many times in front of many his business associates. What a shame feeling Shylock confronted! At the end of the story, Shylock said something on the court moved me deeply. He proposed that those slaves should be given freedom by the public and gets their own right equal to others. Additionally, Shylock’s exclusive daughter----Jessica betrayed him and run away from home with Lorenzo. Jessica fell in love with a young man who is a friend of Antonio secretly. She had determined to leave his father and never come back. Shylock was shocked deeply and heart-broken after got the news that his daughter took large amount of his money and run away from home. Eventually, it doesn’t mentioned whether Shylock’s daughter come back to see him or not. I bet Shylock might felt unhappy and painful in his inner heart not only because the loss of his property but also for the leaving of Jessica. Regardless of how many weakness he have, Shylock is always a child’s father. Any parents would feel anguished if they are betrayed and abandoned by their sweety.
Besides, Shylock is looked as an isolated man when compared with Antonio. Different with Antonio, he doesn’t have any intimate friend and get others help hardly. Facing the dangerous of being taken a quid of flesh on the chest, Antonio got many helps from Bassano, Portia and many of his friends. Bassano said on the court that he prefer to sacrifice himself for the lives of Antonio；Portia hurried from distance place to save the life of Antonio and help Antonio escape from this bad situation. However, Shylock argued in favor of his requirements to the debtor by himself and no one came out to help him.
