一天晚上，小兔迪迪跟妈妈说：“妈妈，我想去找小青蛙弟弟玩。”妈妈说：“青蛙弟弟在池塘中央开音乐会，你过不去的，妈妈给你唱摇篮曲，你闭上眼睛睡觉啊！”于是，妈妈唱了起来，一遍又一遍，小兔迪迪假装睡着了，而妈妈唱着唱着，自己也睡着了。

节目结束后，那只兔子对鸽子们说：“朋友们，你们不会想想未来的生活吗？”鸽子们说：“兄弟，你说什么胡话呀！咱们未来的生活，不就是啄啄小米，表演时扑扑翅膀，从帽子里飞出来吗？”兔子很不解，歪着头想了想，说：“这是你们的生活，仅满足于能够衣食无忧的生活。我不满足，难道吃饱喝足不是为了有力气去探索世界吗？我就是要走，去更多美丽的地有没有看看！”话没有说完，兔子瘦小的身躯消失在夜幕里。“多倔的兔子呀！”鸽子们嘀咕着。
兔子走了，它走向东边，拜访土坡上繁荣的“胡萝卜城”。因为那里的居民——野兔们擅长种胡萝卜，所以叫胡萝卜城。刚走进去，兔子就发现了它的家人，是呀，兔子结束它的第一次表演，虽然只是十天半个月的离别，对家人们来说是度日如年啊！此时，兔子不禁两眼泛起泪花，决定在这住下。它学会了如何倒立着播种、阅读图书馆里所有的藏书、给年幼的小兔子们当老师??当然，兔子做了许计多多的事，都在为胡萝卜城做贡献，有时，它也跑遍城郊，跳上火车去世界各地游玩。因为，在胡萝卜城，兔子们的暑假和寒假实在难过，唯一的活动就是种胡萝卜城内前所未见的新品种胡萝卜。因此，兔子也不知不觉地在外旅游好几年。虽然风尘仆仆，有时还会饥肠辘辘，但它明白了生活的美好，世界的奇妙。有一天，它想起老朋友，就回到了剧院。
“回来了！那小兄弟居然回来了！”年老的鸽子们异口同声地说。兔子轻松的说：“是呀，我回来了，请问诸位生活得好吗？”兔子依然那么文质彬彬。“不好，我们活了许多年，还是不知道生活的意义。”“你们可以和我去旅行，或许能得到答案。”
瞧，兔子与鸽子们出发了。谁知道它们的旅行会如何精彩呢？
