A story with my father

My story with my father can not be told without mentioning mountains. My father is a mountaineering enthusiasts. He boarded the peak of many mountains in his youth. When I was little and just learned how to run, he would take me to climb the mountains each summer vacation. Maybe due to some genetic factor, I’m naturally athletic and I enjoy mountaineering just as my father always does. But the thing is, I never asked why. Why is he obsessed with this kind of sport? I was too young to care about this question. In my elementary school, I learned a poem by Du Fu, a renowned Chinese poet. It says when shall I reach the top and hold all mountains in a single glance? It was like a sudden enlightenment to me. I thought that should explain what made my father clinging to the dream of summit. And when I went out climbing again with my father, I felt really proud when I reached the top. I could feel the way the poet felt. But when I grew older and read more books, I guessed maybe I was wrong. The real joy that lies within climbing should be climbing itself. It is a process of going beyond yourself and challenging the limit. It feels like everything is possible. I feel really excited just at the thought of it when I climb the mountains again. However, I was wrong again. It was after the college entrance exam when my father finally told me why he loved mountaineering for so long. A sentence bumped into his eyes when he was a student, and this sentence changed his view of life. When a professional climber was asked what kept him going, the climber said because the mountain is there, with his finger pointing afar. My father told me this story. I was shocked just as my father did when he first heard it. From then on, I know that there is no limit in the path, and I should keep moving no matter what adversaries might appear, because there’s always something new out there, somewhere I’ve never been. Now 2 years has passed since I became a college student. I want to thank my father for the time he told me the truth about him. Getting admitted to a good university is not nearly the end, though many teenagers and parents think so. In fact, your life just begin when you step into the campus. And I leaned that I should never forget my original intention to study in this prestigious college, to see more of the world, and to climb more mountains. I live in a different city from my father now, mountaineering is still my favorite sport. Whenever I arrived at the peak, I think of my father and his words. What kept him so long keeps me this far, too. And I want to tell you my story with my father so that it will keep more people going on.
